What’s better than BRR?

All CSAUP Backblasts

February 7th, 2017 By Chowder

Talk to just about anyone who did both CSAUP events last year and they’ll tell you Time Laps at the US National White Water Center. “Why?” say you. Tons of 2nd F (teams aren’t split in two and you see PAX from other teams), no smelly vans, close to home, family can visit, River Jam afterward, beer, no smelly van, three good hot meals, competition, music, beer, s’mores, fire pits, burpee contests (can you beat @Google?), no smelly vans, hot showers, camping, raffles/giveaways, beer and more… do I really need to continue?

Now that you’re sold, Hard Commit in the comments below. If you really need more details, those are below too, but you did catch the part about beer and no smelly vans, right? You don’t have to be a stellar runner as we will have multiple teams with different objectives – from ultra competitive with a desire to top the podium (fell just a hair short last year) to a team who just wants to hang out for the 2nd F while running a short lap or two. If you’re uncertain, talk to a brother who did it last year and before you know it, you’ll be HCing in the comments below.

Check out last year’s video here: 2016 Time Laps Recap/Hype Video

The following info was blatantly plagiarized (with modification) from Nanny’s pre-blast last year:

You lost me at “24 hours of running” – no way I can or want to do this.

  1. Teams of up to 12 may average a mere 10-12 miles per runner.  Over 24 hours.  You can do that. However, that’s not required – only one lap per team member is required and the shortest lap is just a flat mile (actually 0.9 miles) around the pond. See, easy…
  2. All you have to do to prepare is join your brothers for the Wed Cruise and Fri Speed workouts.  You do that and you will have NO problem. We’ll have options for all levels of runners.

You had me at “24 hours of running” – tell me more!

  1. Friday May 5th from 7PM to Saturday May 6th 7PM
  2. Whitewater rafting center.  $100 race entry.  3 hot meals (dinner, breakfast, and lunch).  Access to showers and locker room.  Run-in, run-out camp sites.  Beer from NoDa Brewing Co.  Post-race concert, and an event tee-shirt (add $25 to get a sweet hoodie too!)  Ummm….this may be the highest density bang for your buck running event I have heard of.
  3. They will give each team a campsite at the whitewater center which will be HQ.
  4. No sweaty vans.
  5. We are building teams for any and all MeCa pax members.  Other regions will have their own master Q’s.
  6. You can read all about it right here: http://usnwc.org/play/whitewater-race-series/upcoming/time-laps-24-hour-relay-race/

How are we going to skin this cat?

  1. Teams of anywhere from 1 – 12 people; most folks do this in teams of 6 or 12.  Average mileage for a 6 man team is 20.6 miles and for a 12 man team, 10.5 miles.
  2. You don’t have to maintain a running order.  Rule is that each team member must run at least one lap out on the course.  After that one grueling lap, your #FleshAnchor can curl up in his ENO and sleep till concert time.
  3. Once we gather HCs we will figure out how many teams we will have.  We will identify a captain for each team who will register his team’s name.  Then each team member will sign up under that team on the website (little different than the BRR).

I am soooooo in.  How do I make this dream a reality?

  1. Hard Commit (comment below or by email) to me ASAP or by Sunday, March 19th, 2017 at the latest
  2. Start training – training info will be forthcoming to help you prepare for the running part – beer drinking prep you can handle on your own
  3. Stay tuned for more details like how to pay, team assignments, etc.
  4. Recruit, spread the word, EH your fellow MeCa brothers
  5. Post on May 5th with camping gear in hand, ready for a good time!

  4. So minimum of 1 course run?

What is a flesh anchor? Person that watches over the camp site?

Do multiple people go out at once is it one at a time?

What is an example of activity for bonus points from last year?

    1. Minimum one leg per teammate but you’ll want to do more.
#fleshanchor is the lexicon term for the slowest man on a CSAUP team. More generally, any man who’s Deceleration is creating Drag on his Organization.
Only one PAX at a time for the relay leg, but multiple PAX can go out for the bonus points.
Bonus points were earned by completing a card of some “off-course” orienteering points. Plus there’s always something new for bonus points (plus contests, games and giveaways!)

  5. I’m really looking forward to this…..Assuming that you guys still allow prodigal PAX on your running teams.

I hated to miss last year but from the sounds of it, it has all the stuff I loved from the BRR and none of the stuff I hated.

  6. HC – love this event.

  7. Tentative HC. Need to confirm no conflicts. I will want to be on one of MeCas ‘not expecting to win the relay’ teams :-).

  8. HC!

  10. HC for the team that doesn’t include the word “competitive” or any derivation thereof.

  15. HC for the easy peasy team.

  16. HC for this guy and pumped to join!!! Up for a greater level of competition if I can make the cut!

    1. Argh…. moving this to a SC due to scheduling conflicts…. stay tuned….

      1. Man @Nighthawk, so many SCs/NCs lately. You don’t have a commitment problem do you?

        1. Me, no. But my 2.0s, a higher power, my M, or a combination of the aforementioned appear to be concerned with any running commitments I planned for 2017 and have schedule sabotaged my every move. I’m calling BS on 2017 already….

  22. @Chowder – How many HCs do you have now for TimeLapse? We were trying to get an Isotope team together and a few had to drop so may not be able to happen. However, I have 4 Isotope guys who are HC’d and all are very strong runners. Does Meca have room?

    1. @JLo, we’ll figure it out. We have two full teams right now but the HCs are still coming in, so we might end up with 3 teams. Worst case, we get them lined up as alternates which we will most likely need. Email me their names and contact info. Thanks brother!

  23. SC as of 3/15. I know I’ll be coaching 3 baseball games on Sat. Sounds like a blast!

  24. My 2.0 Brooklyn is a HC for the same team as his Pops. Adding some young blood.

  25. HC

  26. HC for the fun team

  27. This was great. Since I have not done BRR I can’t say it was better…. but can imagine that it was! being a week out from completion, to compliment the PB, will there be a BB for us to reflect of the fun times that were had!
