Frost Bowl Rugby
All Harrisburg BackblastsFebruary 3rd, 2018
8 show for the Frost Bowl and a rugby scrum broke out. It was sixth and final day of YHC’s IronQ. Five F3 brothers and three 2.0s chose the #redpill on this chilly morning for some football. But YHC decided to mix it up a little and play touch rugby (with a rugby ball and South African rules) instead. Here’s how it went:

The Thang: Touch Rugby
Touch Rugby is a fun game which involves a lot of running and strategy. It is played on the “pitch” which is any football size field with two end zones (called the “try zone”). Here are the rules (with a modification YHC learned while in South Africa):
- Divide into two teams. Team that starts on offense has six attempts to get the ball in the opposing team’s try zone. The play starts with the defense punting to the offensive team.
- No forward passes. Offensive player can only pass laterally or pass back (like a toss sweep) to another teammate to advance the ball and move up field.
- To stop the ball, the defense needs to touch the offensive player with two hands. When this happens, the offensive player has to stop and put the ball on the ground. The defense drops back (quadrophilia) 5 steps to give a chance for a new offensive player has to pick it up. Once that offensive player picks up the ball, the player can run with it or pass it back to a teammate.
- Scoring: Again, the offense get six attempts to score a touchdown, which is known in rugby as a “try.” The offense has two options for scoring a try. One option is to run and touch the ball down in the try zone to be awarded a try. The running try is worth 1 point. A second option is to score on a punt to another offensive player in the “try zone.” If the offensive player catches the punt in the “try zone” their team is awarded 2 points.
- Turnovers: The ball is turned over to the defense if: a) the offensive team fails to score a try in six attempts; b) the offense drops a pass and the ball hits the ground; or c) the defense intercepts an offensive pass or punt.
As in our usual games of F3 football, when a team scores they get to call out the exercise that the other team needs to complete. The scoring team does have the reps of that exercise.

- Good times this morning with the rugby game! Thanks @JackSparrow for bringing your 2.0s — great to meet @HeatBlast and @Starburst. Thanks @Diesel, @Klump, and @T-Bone for the energy this morning out on the pitch. And @T-Bone, hope the #Dusty is nothing serious. Happy to see @SeismicToad step up and lead the warm-up cadences for the 2.0s.
- Highly recommend the Iron Q Challenge for any F3 brother thinking of it. It takes mental and physical preparation, but the #CARROTS as a ROI is quite satisfying. Thanks @Escalade for delivering the Iron Q Challenge and to @Gamma, @SoloCup, @Clueless, @Wexler, and @FlipPhone for also showing how the Iron Q is done! #Who’sNext?
- HC with @SS Minnow for the Feb. 10 Wings of Eagle service project.
- Check Slack for an upcoming F3 Night at the Charlotte 49ers basketball game at the Halton Arena on Saturday, February 17th, at 7pm. Here’s the link for tickets:

Nice work Helga! Sorry I missed most of it this week. Other training plans and now traveling to Michigan (in February, not smart!).
T-claps to anyone foolish, I mean smart, enough to take the IronQ challenge.
The rugby game sounded like fun. We’ll have to do that again.
