Way off Track
All All MECA BackblastsApril 14th, 2017
2 solid, hard core, beasts of Harrisburg ventured out of the comfort zone and posted for the premier workout in Harrisburg on Friday mornings. The good thing about small groups like this, is that YHC doesn’t have to waste any extra brain cells on who was there to share in the experience.
As the Boy of Banjos rolled into the parking lot, he was greeted by YHC fumbling around with the ‘ole time piece and a whole lot of beeping as I scrolled through work-outs past looking for something that would cover the 45 minutes we had coming to us. As I found a delicious little number, I looked up and asked if Banjo had his head lamp with him…his deer in the headlights look was all YHC needed to determine that this off track idea might not work out…but the dude came around and said “I ain’t skeered like SoloCup or anything, where you want to go?” YHC fought a bit with the idea of taking this dude out on the road, but decided that we would be good to go. I proceeded to equip him with a reflective thong that smelled worse than one of Hootie’s paleo brownies and a blinkie that may or may not work…but it’s better than nothing.
Banjo Boy was given a choice of two workouts…3 minute intervals or 8 minute intervals. He opted for the 8 minute…how hard could it be…rice doesn’t even cook in 8 minutes. We had a 10 minute warm-up to get loose and talk about the pace that we should be shooting for during the intervals…should be around your 10K pace…”comfortably uncomfortable”…I never really got what that meant. Here is @Gamma’s stab at it…”So it should be like when you are kicked back in your recliner with your Guinness just out of reach. So you have to lean forward to get to it. I will just stay sitting up until I finish it, then I will recline after I ring the bell as I wait for another one to magically appear.” That is a pretty good take on it. All I know, is that the shiznizzle gets pretty real after about 6 minutes if you are doing it right.
Alright, so we had 2:00 of moving rest between the intervals…We hit the neighborhood “up the road,” otherwise known as Flowers Farm, and the other neighborhood “down Stallings Road,” also known as Stallings Farm. We made it down to the elementary school and cruised by the meat heads lifting heavy objects. As I say that, I realize that all I really saw was 10 grown-a$$ed men laying around on the pavement. YHC didn’t see any uniformed po-po’s around, so it probably wasn’t some sort of sting or anything. We had just enough time to make it back to the reservation by 6:14 and cool down mosey back to the track, with just a few minutes of overtime. Banjo made it back safe and sound and probably 6 miles stronger…YHC was a little surprised that he was able to comprehend my half-a$$ed directions, which probably sounded a little like…we are going to run…run over here, run over there, run fast, run slow, shout out at the kettle bell gang, then run back over here.
Banjo took us out with an awesome message….Thank you Lord for sending your son and for his ultimate sacrifice. All for us and our sins. We praise you that he IS alive.
The Skin:
- Thanks to Banjo Boy for coming out and playing along.
- I am sure that there was a big crowd that came out…they were just a little late, didn’t see anybody at the track and decided to pack it in. I was glad to see @Oz at coffee. Sorry we missed you at the track. #yeahright.
- Good times at coffeteria…and on a Friday at that.
- @Banjo Boy is getting faster….a lot faster.
- BRR teams better recognize….Those hills aint gonna get any flatter.

Boy howdy. If you want a good time, chasing Bull around for 45ish minutes should be on your list. It was nice of him to circle back. Maybe 1/4 mile’s worth of turn arounds.
I must have missed the “comfortable” part. I was uncomfortable the whole time… Even though I beat my 10k time from Saturday, I still wouldn’t have been any closer to BBQ. That’s his name, right? Russell Russell? Or is it Rusty? I don’t know.
I do know that my legs are still tired…
@Bull – your summary of my uncomfortable is suspiciously accurate. I may need to start keeping the blinds closed at night. #peepingtom
