What’s the deal with calling cadence?
All All MECA BackblastsAugust 2nd, 2016
So, in the gloom of a favorable humidity, (well the humidity was better than the beach but worse than NYC), YHC called a Virgin Q to an awesome PAX of 15. You would think that 8 years in the USAF would have prepared me for calling cadence. But, I guess Air Force officers don’t do much marching. Add on to the fact that I was Medical Corps. That’s even worse!! Those jelly belly doctors… It was fun and I appreciated the assistance from Rib Shack, Buckwheat, Forgotten Jelly, and Stopper for chiming in on the cadence. Jelly, even tried to no avail teaching me the preparatory and execution commands. It’s hard to learn new tricks when all you’re focusing on is trying to complete 100% of the exercises you’re dealing out and breath.
The morning went like this:
Disclaimer: If you dropped dead, we did not have a professional relationship.
Warm Up/Dynamic Stretch: Mosey around the church –> 15 SSH IC (this was where the cadence became a reality) –> 15 IST IC –> 15 Windmills IC –> 15 Cotton Pickers IC –> Arm circles
The Thang:
Two stations 40 yards apart –> 20 mericans and 20 LBCs –> run to opposite station –> 20 lunges and 20 heel lifts –> run back to first station. Repeato decrease by 2 each time (20-18-16-14-12-10). Those who finished first got an extra bonus of running around the two islands until everyone finished.
Run to benches –> 20 dips –> run to church colums –> 2 minutes of wall sit with last 30 seconds doing air presses IC –> Repeato X 3 for dips total –> Repeato wall sit with decreasing to 1:30 seconds second time, again with 30 seconds of air presses IC
Buckwheat reminded YHC that my workout was soft when he said I had 18 minutes left. So, we Indian run to haunted daycare. In groups of 5 (because I don’t want to practice trauma medicine before my AM shower), the PAX sprinted up the hill –> 5 burpees –> walk back down –> Repeato X 4. Disorganized Indian run back to church because of traffic.
Warm Down: 20 Pretzels IC for each side –> Guess Q with Jelly calling Legs to Mars or something like that X3 –> Finished off with two basic Tai Chi moves, high/low blocks and side blocks.
Finished off with group prayer.
It was fun calling the Q today. YHC hope you’ve gotten some value out of it.
Call off…

Good virgin Q workout Cardiac. The cadence thing will work itself out in the long run. My favorite part was the stretching and being instructed to count to 120…no wait, we don’t have time for that…..make it to 40…..28, 29, 30 and recover. Good times.
By the way, did anyone notice whether King Louie was there? Maybe I should ask Buckwheat.
LOL. I had a little Jelly in my left ear telling me to move along. BTW, how long is the exercise session supposed to run?
Most of the workouts are 45 minutes. I like to finish in about 42 to 43 minutes so we have time for COT. I don’t want to keep guys much past 45 minutes just in case they have to leave.
Only workouts longer than 45 are the Saturday ones usually. Though one of the Men’s Breakfast workouts I lost track of time during and did around 64 minutes…
I’m here now, but I don’t see Buckwheat. He must’ve gone off looking for me.
Nice job cardiac. You did a good job of handling the mumblechatter. Cadence counting will come with practice. I look forward to your next Q.
I didn’t see King Louie.
Good job Cardiac! Was a good workout!
Another amusing thing was BlindDate asking me, as we were both late, if the mosey was going to go around the church or if we were going to have to chase them down… luckily they all came back!
Cardiac, I am sure you will get the cadence down next time!
Good lead sir Cardiac! Enjoyed it!
Sounds like a good workout! Good job cardiac, wish I was there to see it
Good backblast, and a fun Q. I like how the final Indian Run just turned in to everyone got across the road and ran normal pace while 1 or 2 attempted to Indian Run.
Were there other Tai Chi ideas that got tossed out due to lack of time? I think Rib Shack may be fairly easy to hit, based on his “blocking”….
Yeah. I rushed the Tai Chi a little because of time. It should be properly done with appropriate breathing and mental focus. It’s about proper form and not speed. It’s the perfect thing for a warm down. If you guys like it, I’ll do a little more explaining next time I Q.
Yeah I was wondering if you’d tried to start Mary early to have more Tai Chi time.
Reminds me I was still wanting to Q a Boot Camp to make those who haven’t come to Iron Fist or Saturday before the Men’s Breakfast experience one of the MMA routines I stole to lead with…..
Great Q, Cardiac. Enjoyed the workout!
