The Pursuit of Happiness/The Importance of a Positive Attitude

All All MECA Backblasts

November 3rd, 2014 By SoloCup

Seven men gathered at Harrisburg Family House to discuss the pursuit of Happiness.  We got a little off track, and strode into a discussion of the importance of attitude (and its effect on our Happiness.)  The following is what we planned to discuss.  Gotta show to know the rest of the story.

The Thang

In these days of Pestilence, Plagues, and Politics, it’s not easy to have a Positive Attitude.  However, I can honestly say there is no greater leadership quality than to approach life with sense of Optimism. It builds loyalty, motivates the masses, and inspires your fellow man.

Today’s discussion focuses on what the Bible has to say about the The Pursuit of Happiness.

Admittedly, I am not an avid reader of Biblical text and, truth be told, I’ve never read the Bible all the way through.  That being said, this verse has made a significant impact on my life.

Philippians 4:8

Bam! The Apostle Paul nails it in one short (kinda) concise sentence.  We’re done, pass the bacon, did anybody check out the Panther’s game Thursday?  When are they going to get it together? Just kidding.

Discuss the Leadership implications of this verse.

  1. How often have you come up against something that seems like a negative, and then when you really think about it, there is some good that came of it?
  2. How much better would your attitude be if you practiced this advice in your daily interactions with others?

General thoughts on achieving and maintaining Happiness:

  1. Focus on the good things in your life; list your blessings

Whichever you call it, make a list of those items you are grateful for and contemplate them regularly. It’s amazing how much happier and more positive you are when you truly focus on the good things in your life.

Proverbs 17:22

 1 Thessalonians 5:16-19

  1. Strive to live a life of contentment

The Buddhists have a saying: ‘Contentment is the highest wealth.’ When we are content we do not need to get anything, go anywhere or be anything to have happiness. Because we already are, and thus, contentment is more valuable than any possession or accomplishment

Learn to stop chasing those things that do not matter and focus on those that do.

Hebrews 13:5

  1. Worry less

It’s taken me years to realize that I do not need to worry about every little detail in my life.  Learn to let things go.  More often than not, things turn out for the best anyway.

Philippians 4:6

 Jeremiah 29:11

 Matthew 6:25-34

  1. Forgive

A lot of negative energy is tied up in animosity toward a perceived slight/wrong doing by another. This is time and resources that can be better spent focusing on the positive aspects of one’s life.

 1 Peter 3:9

 Ephesians 4:31-32

  1. Look at the adverse situations in your life as a means of preparation for greater challenges ahead.

Bad things happen to good people. Why?  Because though it may sound cliché, these life experiences make you stronger.  Focusing on the lessons learned from these trials and tribulations, rather than on why you are being put through them, will pay dividends in the long run.

2 Corinthians 4:17-18

  1. Practice patience

Like your average three year old, we often want the good things in life, NOW!  When we do not get them, we have negative feelings toward the World/God.  In reality, all things happen in God’s time and when we are ready to receive them.  The sooner we realize this, the happier we will be.

Psalm 27:13 -14

 John 3:27

  1. Treat others well

This is the single greatest way to achieve Happiness.  When we work to do good for others, we in turn feel Happy.

Matthew 7:12

Proverbs 15:1

 Proverbs 11:24-25

 John 13:34-35

Discuss the Leadership implications of this list:

  1. Notice the active nature of the list above, and that you (with God’s help) are ultimately responsible for initiating the happiness in your life.
  2. What are some of the ways we can instill these concepts in our families?

This is but the tip of the iceberg on what the Bible has to say with regards to Happiness.

Moleskin
  1. Thank you for the opportunity to lead Gentlemen.Your participation meant a lot.
  2. Read over what I planned to discuss and fill in the blanks where we left off.  Gotta follow my own advice on Time Management 😉
  3. Nice discussion on the Back of the PAX vs the Front of the PAX in our daily workout, and the difference of attitude between the two sections.
  4. The brief respite on Attitude and Effort comes from the book  The Legacy Builder.  Great short read and was reviewed at the last F3 Connect (Exit 18) meeting.
  5. It was great to see Bewitched back out after illnesses and work had kept him at bay.  We will keep a seat warm for you Brother

  7. Community Outreach: Shoes (BBQ) and Soup through tomorrow (SoloCup/Schedule C)

  1. Enjoyed the discussion men.

  2. Great work @solocup. All great stuff. When I consider all the time that I have wasted worrying about things that I couldnt control, it makes me sick. How about all of the positive things that I could have done instead of wallowing… Same deal. Only way to go is forward and change the things I can. I truly enjoyed it.

  3. What a good way to start a Monday & subsequent week! Thanks to @SoloCup for yet another good lead (you cover them all brother, boot camps, KB’S, Q-School & now you’re preaching too!). Thanks to the rest of the PAX for their input & general head nodding during bites of bacon & refills of coffee.

  4. Great messages and recap @SoloCup! I would have loved to be in on the discussion. I don’t know where I picked it up or heard it from, but it’s a message I live by that has helped me along the way… “you have 100% control over the attitude you bring to any situation”. I’ve seen poor attitudes be a ‘cancer’ to teams and families… misery loves company. A strong positive attitude breeds success… it too is infectious.

  5. @Solo Cup…Good Scripture selections and good discussion by all about focusing on the positives…..as always, that it is easier said than done, but well worth the continual effort

@Gamma…embrace the grits…you’re in the South now, man!

  6. @Gamma’s got a negative attitude about grits…

    1. “What’s a grit?” – every yankee

      1. “I’m hungry, let’s go get some grits” – no Yankee ever

        1. I guess I wasn’t as discrete as I thought I was when I scraped them away from the rest of the food! It’s not that I have a negative attitude towards grits; just trying to focus on the positives, like bacon…and eggs….and bacon.

  7. @Solocup – an excellent morning. It definitely started my day off nicely. Great turn out too. Was it the interior heat or bacon or both? Regardless, it was a great “workout.” I highlighted a lot of these scriptures.
