Remembering 9/11 with 911 reps
All Rolling Stone BackblastsSeptember 11th, 2017
5 PAX took the #DRP and entered the gloom on the 16th anniversary of one of the most tragic events in American history. YHC was determined to honor the lives of those lost, and their families, with a solid beatdown. My somewhat usual nonsense would be not be present at all this morning. The research began this weekend into what kind of Bell Buster beatdown would work. So, of course, I consulted the interwebs. Their was really only one kettlebell workout with a 9/11 theme that really popped up. It was a youtube video. YHC began to watch it and it was like the good Lord himself had lined this workout up for us. The guy in the video did 911 total reps of single-arm push presses with a giant red kettlebell that was identical to Big Red! 32KG, 70-71 lbs.! Boom, we had our workout! Check the video out right here, the guy is not that big, but he went full beast-mode to knock this out. Now, there was no way any of us were single-arm pressing Big Red 911 times (let alone 9-11 times.) So we would use our regular bells. The guy in the video took about 1 hour and 35 minutes to complete the 911 reps with the 32KG bell, so I was hoping we could cut that by more than half with our bells that were at least half that weight. We were about to find out, so with a disclaimer we moseyed to the HT lot.
Warmarama: Put down bells, quick lap around the lot and then:
- SSH X 9 IC
- Merkins X 11 IC
The Thang: 911 Reps for 9/11
- The PAX were told that they could choose any exercise they liked…and perform 911 reps of it. YHC chose to stick with the single-arm push press like the video (switching arms as needed, cumulative count, not per arm), and other PAX stuck with that as well. Modification came up early as PAX mixed in other movements (curls, lawnmowers, etc.) but the total reps of 911 was still the goal. YHC was determined to do the same exercise throughout. Keeping count became fairly difficult and we watched Sparknut move down the parking lot to a parking space where he explained that for each hundred he knocked out, he would move to the next space to make counting easier. Good idea! The rest of the PAX adopted the strategy and we pressed on. Not much mumblechatter as we were working hard to finish before time would be called. The timing ended up working out for us as we all completed our 911 reps with a few minutes to spare. Great work gentlemen! Short rest periods helped, but you could not rest too long or you would not have made it. YHC was proud to have completed all reps with the single-arm push press, bring on the ibuprofen and ice!!
Upon completion, we moseyed back to CB with the bells. No time for Mary.
COT: Prayers to all affected by the hurricanes in TX, FL, GA, etc. Prayers to all those affected by 9/11, which is pretty much all of us, but particularly those that lost loved ones. Continued prayers for injured PAX, Marie’s mom, and Whatley’s SIL.
Moleskin: Amazing job, Packer, Sparknut, The Bear and Project! That was 45 minutes of determination right there! I thought that was a great way to start the week and get our minds right with a proper perspective.
I believe that is the first time we have done a KB beatdown (or maybe any beatdown) where it was requested that one exercise be done for the entire workout. I think it worked well. I was worried we would not have enough time. If we hustle, we could probably have a 1000 rep beatdown sometime…yay! I am not sure how my shoulders are going to be doing going forward, we shall see… If we are doing endless Tunnels of Love tomorrow in the pouring rain, PAX might have to crawl OVER me as I might be lying face first on the ground due to extreme shoulder soreness/fatigue.
God Bless those who lost their lives on 9/11/01. We mourn and we remember.

Never forget!
Well Done gentlemen! Hate I missed the fun!!
Mad props to Heatstroke this morning for helping us remember what so many gave and how much we have to be thankful for. And for powering through your 911 single arm presses. You proved what you were made of this morning!
I’ll second Sparknut’s comments. Tenacity of 1 exercise this am was tough. Props Heatstroke. If you can’t Q it…
I went to work in disbelief on this day 16 years ago now that changed the world forever. 2,977 lives lost, 414 of those included 71 police officers and 343 firefighters. Many others have sacrificed through military action. We will never forget.
