Mamba Mentality

All All MECA Backblasts

January 27th, 2020 By Adam Butler

I was never a big Kobe Bryant fan. I always thought he was arrogant on the court and that rubbed me the wrong way for whatever reason. However .. dude could BALL. I’ve watched a ton of NBA and I learned to respect his game and how hard he played and how hard he worked off the court.   When I told my wife(very much NOT a basketball fan)he had died even she was a bit shaken. 41 years old with four kids and he likely spent his final moments holding his daughter as they both realized their lives were about to end in a helicopter crash. Obviously it made me think about myself. 40 with two kids and outside of serving to keep from hitting a car that didn’t check their blind spot I largely haven’t had a scary moment with my kids.

Kobe was interesting for many reasons but was impressed me most is how hard he worked away from basketball. He cheated on his wife, you may remember the odd press conference the two of them did shortly after, and then worked incredibly hard to become a better husband and by all accounts was indeed a great one. He also called a referee a pretty bad homophobic slur a few years ago while he was sitting on the bench after a call he disagreed with. After he was called out he sincerely apologized and worked with multiple orgs after that to show him even if you don’t agree with a particular lifestyle, there’s no reason to call people derogatory slurs because of it.  He’s one of the few adults, famous or otherwise I’ve ever heard of that actually learned a lesson.  We humans are a mostly hardheaded bunch.  We often assume we know everything because (enter any reason here) and obviously that’s not the case.  Fair play to Kobe Bryant for not being afraid to admitting his mistakes and working hard to overcome them.

He started taking helicopters because with LA traffic he was missing carpool lines and his kids’ sports practices.  His wife told him she’d do it but nope, Kobe literally flew home to pick up his kids then flew back downtown for work.  It’s a shame it ended the way it did.

I wasn’t a big Kobe fan but his death has reminded me I can be better. It takes a ton of work but it’s absolutely worth it.  May he, his daughter and the seven others on the flight rest peacefully and my God hold their families in the palm of his hand. I’m praying for them. I hope you do, too.

We did some exercises, slung a few bells, ran a few hills and finished up with some deep stretches to help Othello’s back.  All of these were in multiples of 8.
