Recipe for Disaster

All All MECA Backblasts

February 4th, 2016 By Disaster

With a rookie ‘Q’ and a previously untested workout the potential for catastrophe was great. But with the weather continuing to cooperate (56 degrees at game time) 22 men showed up ready for the challenge. After a quick disclaimer the PAX were off for a tour of the lower parking lot that included forwards and backwards runs, karaoke, and the always popular Stoli Skip. YHC immediately began to sense his plan beginning to unravel when he noticed that the lower lot was much bigger than he had remembered (sadly something I don’t hear the M say around my house anymore).

16 X Merkin IC

Indian Run (3 lines) back to the Middle School for Disaster’s first annual F3 Relay Race Extravaganza (TM)

THE MAIN EVENT

The PAX were divided into three teams of seven men each (with much difficulty, not my finest moment as a CPA/Math Guy), with YHC serving as a floater. Nanny, Hammer, and Brinkley were chosen as team captains, primarily because they are three of the many men that regularly blow past me in typical run related events.

The PAX were instructed to rotate through six different pain stations as follows:

Station One – Merkins

Station Two – Lunges, alternating legs

Station Three – LBC

Station Four – Imperial Squat Walkers

Station Five – Mountain Climbers

Station Six – Squats

Station Seven involved a sprint down through the parking lot to the Ridge Road Middle School rock and back, then tagging out to the team member in Station Six for the next leg of the race. The teams then rotated to the next station and repeato until everyone had rotated through two full cycles.

Afer the first full cycle, an audible was called and stations one and three were flip flopped to give some relief to the runners (thanks for the suggestion @Google)

Although the race was really close at the midway point, Hammer’s Team Two pulled away and won rather handily, followed by Nanny’s Team One and Brinkley’s Team Three.

After a ten-count from Avalanche to allow the runners to recover, the Pax headed back down to wrap things up

  1. Thanks to everyone who came out to support me for my first Q. I quickly learned that an extended warmup run can make it very difficult to call out the cadence for Warmarama. The relay race sounded really good in my head, but clearly still has a few kinks to work out. Maybe we’ll try it again this summer with more teams and fewer pain stations. There was a lot more running than I anticipated, and this is coming from the guy who is usually in the back of the PAX complaining about all the running. Thanks to @Google, @Harding, @Nanny, and others for giving me some constructive tips about improving the workout and my overall Q performance.
  2. If I left anything out of the backblast please let me know. I accidentally left my weinke in my gym shorts and it went through the wash this morning (that sounds a lot dirtier than it probably should)
  3. The mumblechatter was definitely down this morning with @Gump and @Chopper MIA. Also most of us are probably still recovering from @Alcatraz’s massive beatdown on Tuesday.
  4. Shout out to @Backcracker, a Davis Lake regular who made the drive over to support/mock me for my first Q.
  5. @Freon, I enjoyed our chat this morning (#earlyarrivals)
  6. On a serious note, thanks to all of you for your support during my first six months at F3. If you told me in August that I would be getting up at 5AM to run circles around a parking lot in Skybrook doing something called the ‘Sharknado” I would have laughed. Now I am actively seeking out challenges like that. It’s a little intimidating joining a men’s workout group when you’re a skinny, weak, slow accountant but you guys have been completely supportive and encouraging while still getting me to push myself beyond my limitations. So thanks.
  7. On that note, if you know someone that would benefit from F3, don’t give up on them. @Bootstrap (and later@Bling) nagged for me two years to come out and join them. @Old School finally drove over and picked me up one Saturday morning to make sure I showed up. And I’ve been hooked ever since.
  8. Final note – if you are looking for a way to shore up your Third F (and your Second) we have a group of 10-12 men who meet every Thursday night from 8-10PM at @Old School’s house. 5819 McTaggart Lane, in Master’s Hill across the street from Highland Creek Elementary, same cul-de-sac as @Pavarotti. Regulars include @Bootstrap, @Old School, @Harding, @Backcracker, @Search and Rescue, @Titanium, @R2D2, and @Haskel. A simple weekly walk through the bible that usually morphs into deeper discussion, no preparation needed. Let me know if you would like to join us. All are welcome.

  1. Great VQ! Your cadence calling was on point even if you were a little winded. I hated the run (#virtualmerkins was the result after round 1) but enjoyed being able to catch up with @PonyBoy at the stations.

  2. T-claps @Disaster! We missed @Backcracker and his mumblechatter this morning but he was adamant about being there for your VQ.

By the way, accountants are the best cadence counters 😉

  3. @Disaster Well done. Your cadence calling was spot on and that is usually a challenging area for VQ’s. You had a well balanced beatdown that hit upper and lower body. First one is done and I am sure you are already thinking about the next. T-claps.

  4. @Disaster, Great Virgin Q! I could care less about your Math skill during a beatdown… But you better call a solid cadence.. and you Sir, delivered! Great Job! I loved the relay race, with just a few small adjustments it will become a PAX favorite! @Harding great push as always.

  5. @Disaster sorry I missed it. I was at @RollingStone, but you will never know b/c no BB.

    1. #Tclaps to @Forgotten Jelly for walking me through my first Backblast. Pretty easy once you give it a try. Thanks to all you guys handling the IT stuff on the back end.

    2. Uuuhhhh, Our VQ had it posted before 6am. #justsayin 🙂

  6. @Disaster, sorry I missed it but we had our own VQ at RS this morning (and @Gump too!). The relay looks awesome, can’t wait to spring that one on the Stoners over the next few weeks. (it’s not stealing, it’s recycling) I remember your naming post at MCP which wasn’t that long ago. Nice fast track to Qing – T-claps to you! BTW, we do enjoy visiting Qs at RS and I look forward to hearing that solid cadence.

@TheFarm – I understand that the accountant types may be decently skilled but I’m fairly certain drummers count the best cadence!

  7. That was not a disaster! Great VQ. Fun workout, I wouldn’t change a thing. Especially the virtual merkins @alcatraz was doing.

    Way to go team two!
