11 pax showed up on a perplexingly chilly morning, following 2 beautiful days.

Extended warmup. Burpee ladder.
-Top level – 2 burpees. Down the steps to 4th level
-4 burpees. Down to 3rd

Now that pax were nice and warm after 50 burpees at breakneck pace, the main event could begin
The Thang – Break up into 2 teams of varying brain power
Team 1: Catfish, TP, Homeland, Java, Tom B Stone
Team 2: Grover, Spud, Marlboro, Tupperware, Look Me Up
Rules: Trivia question is asked by Q. The first team to answer correctly gets to stay at the lower level of the top deck and do an ab circuit (5 crunch up, 5 V ups, 5 pulse up, hold plank). Loser does 10 burpees then quadrophilia up the ramp to touch the wall and back.
-A wrong answer results in 10 burpees, followed by quadrophilia
-Abstaining from answering results in 10 burpees, followed by quadrophilia. Sometimes abstinence is the best protection
Q 1: In chess, which piece is classically worth 5 points? Correct answer: Rook
Catfish yelled Knight and Spud yelled Queen (I think). That result set in motion a pretty consistent theme for both teams.

Q 2: Which countries made up the original Axis powers in WWII? Catfish with Italy (Q gave Germany and Japan)
Team 2 burpees, and there was much rejoicing from Grover
Q 3: Which explorer named the Pacific Ocean? Tombstone whispered Magellan to his team, but was bitten by the confidence bug. No teams answer. Q gave the hint that he was also the first gentleman to circumnavigate the globe. Catfish with the answer: Magellan. Look Me Up admitted later that his answer was Rand McNally.

Q 4: Which animal is in the Porsche logo? Team 1 answered lion. Team 2 answered elk deer, which must be some kind of hybrid like a liger. Both incorrect.
Both teams burpees, and Grover rejoiced.
Q 5: What is the only edible food that never goes bad? Marlboro with honey. (apparently this question was a recycle and Marlboro answered last time as well)

Q 6: What was the first toy to be advertised on TV? Team 1 with Slinky. Team 2 with Radio Flyer. Both incorrect. Q was looking for Mr Potato Head

Q 7: Who created Sherlock Holmes? TP with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Team 2 burpees, and there was much rejoicing from Grover
***At this point in the morning, it looked as if Team 1 was going to run away with it and Grover was going to happily do burpees until Mary. But the game took an unexpected turn***
Q 8: What individual awards compose an EGOT? Fans of 30 Rock will know it is an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. Spud with the answer. Tupperware provided 25% of the answer by contributing the Tony.

Q 9: Which country won the 1st ever World Cup in 1930? Spud with Uruguay. Catfish appealed for bonus points by telling Q the capital of Uruguay, to no avail.

Q 10: Who was the 1st gymnast to score a perfect 10? TP correct with Nadia Comenici
Team 2 burpees, and there was much rejoicing from Grover
Q 11: What is the smallest country in the world? Catfish with Vatican City
Team 2 burpees, and there was much rejoicing from Grover
Q 12: What is the loudest animal on Earth? Catfish shouted out Blue Whale. A visibly irate Homeland told him they live underwater. Q made his only mistake of the day here and said Catfish’s answer was ‘close.’ That opened the door for a very uncertain, almost questioning answer from Spud, “what is sperm whale?” Which is, of course, the correct answer, despite them living underwater as Homeland pointed out.

Q 13: Which is 1 of only 2 mammals to lay eggs? Catfish with platypus. TP offered the other for good measure: echidna. Q mistakenly said that was incorrect and that the other was a spiny anteater. After further research, a spiny anteater and an echidna are the same animal. My apologies to TP. Both are known as Monotremes, which means “1 hole”. Figured Tombstone would appreciate that.
Team 2 burpees, and there was much rejoicing from Grover
Q 14: How many teeth does an adult human have? After much deliberation, Spud answered correctly: 32. The ever-competitive Catfish wanted to know if that included wisdom teeth. Tombstone chimed in that that fact doesn’t apply to Rowan county residents.
Team 1 burpees. Grover sad.
Q 15: Which Biblical prophet is said to have been killed by being sawn in half inside a hollow log? TP answered incorrectly with Elijah, despite the fact that he was 1 of only 3 humans to have never actually died (Enoch and Jesus, on a technicality, were the other 2). Team 2 abstains.
Both teams burpees. Team 1 also quadro. Grover mildly happy.
Q 16: Who was the Wampanoag Indian chief that first gave food to the colonists, creating an NFL holiday 400 years later? Team 1 answers Squanto and Team 2 answers something else incorrect.
Both teams burpees. Grover happy.
Q 17: What was the name of the plane that dropped the first Atomic Bomb? Spud with Enola Gay. Catfish with Magnolia Gay. Spud wins
Team 1 burpees. Grover sad.
Q 18: What is the only type of bird that can fly backwards? Marlboro with hummingbird. He nails every agricultural type of question. Tombstone argued that a hummingbird was actually a type of bee and the answer shouldn’t count. Despite his protests, the answer stands.

Q 19 – FINAL QUESTION: What is the culinary term that refers to cooking the fat out of meats like duck and pork? Tombstone in the clutch with rendering. Protests from Team 2 that Marlboro answered first, but to no avail. That answer would prove to be pivotal as we would later see.

Q note to self for improvement. Tally the scores during the workout so we don’t end up with a tie. Ties are like kissing your sister. Only Tombstone likes them.

Organization gets better with each iteration and it seems to be a crowd favorite. The game ended in a tie, which we found out at coffeeteria. This resulted in a sudden death round. Q gave the choice between questions from 2 categories: physics or literature. Pax begrudgingly chose physics. State fans excited. Q: The path traveled by a body through space is known as what? Homeland and Tupperware both with ‘Vector,’ which was incorrect. Correct answer: orbit. Both teams still alive. 2nd question, literature category: In the novel, “1984”, what is the name of the Party leader? Spud brings it home for Team 2 with Big Brother.
Good crowd today. Lots of chatter and energy. Grover upset about cancel culture infiltrating F3 naming conventions. Promised to encourage his kids to play Smear the Queer. Grover also saves on laundry during the cold months by only wearing a T-shirt and shorts, cutting his load by 60%; something Tombstone also does in his private time. Q actually beat Java on the run back to Mary, but was reminded that Java ran 7 miles before the workout, so, big asterisk next to that one. It seems everyone loves the burpee ladder as part of the extended warmup and Java even suggested counting in multiples of 3, instead of 2, next time. Rough count, we did 120 burpees, give or take.
