COT

Prayers for Hops and his family as they lay to rest his grandfather. Prayers for Wham and his wife as they navigate the adoption process.

Moleskin

Been using a bag ‘o props & games during beat downs to distract from the sucky-ness of working out and to get some good chatter.

Today’s pointless game did not disappoint.

Game was simple enough. Set a faux-turf putting hole by where the PAX were doing exercises and let 2 guys putt their way up to the hole with everyone watching. The # of strokes = # of burpees for your team does.

Two simple (…but what would turn out to be very important…) rules given.

  1. whoever got stuck with the plastic putter got to take one off their stroke count.
  2. you can move the hole around****.

Things progressed fine for the first couple of rounds. Everyone was getting their fair share of burpees in.

Then, in what was straight out of the first half of Happy Gilmore, Catfish sh#& the bed putting his round.. I mean really bad! I believe he had a stroke count of 7+ and missed two putts from within a foot of the hole.

(Not to worry reader, this is a redemption story. Calling out Catfish is my attempt at creating a ‘narrative’. I’m not the best with this writing stuff. I’m more a numbers guy. But trying my hardest to remember what Ms. Shipper taught me in the 8th grade about ‘foreshadowing’)

For the 5th round I was paired off with Mayweather. I was expecting the easy ‘W’. I was first to start and took my putt. Which was a nice one. But, it went complete unnoticed! All I heard as I followed my ball was Mayweather and team #1 cheering a hole in one.

HOW?!?! No ball rolled past me.

In what felt like shenanigans… but was 100% legal according to rule #2… Mayweather had indeed gotten a hole in one by picking up the hole and taking to the ball. Defeated, I finished out, reported my score of 3 to my team, and did my burpees in disgrace.

I believe a couple more uneventful rounds came and went before Catfish quietly took the plastic putter and lined up to play again.

Unspoken, but well understood, he was there to redeem himself.

First putt was a beaut! The ball came to rest a mere 3 feet from the front of the hole. But, there are no gimmes on this course! The putt to come was over bricks.

Fighting the demons of his prior round, Catfish took his time to find his line … and sunk the putt!!!

By rule 1, plastic putter gets you minus 1 stroke. And… 2 – 1 = 1 (told you I was good at numbers)

A hole in one!!!!  Redemption!

Catfish didn’t say anything. He quietly put his putter back and never brought it up again.

The rest of the time was for the most part uneventful. However, I do recall someone on the other team kicking our team’s ball into the parking lot. Not to worry, to make it better that same guy was handing out candy in the parking lot afterward from a creepy windowless van.

Beat down was followed by coffee. Always a good time.

Today’s takeaways:

  1. Catfish is very competitive!
  2. Mayweather will find a legal way to get you the best loan

**** intention of rule 2 was to allow players to rotate the turf around so nobody had to putt over the back lip… BUT… ‘intention’ was never stated and no restriction was placed on how far you could move the hole.
