Spider Hunt 1.0
All Highlands BackblastsApril 30th, 2019
Let the record show that YHC was disappointed that conditions weren’t perfect for the first ever Highlands Spider Hunt. With some light dew on the grass, finding those arachnids would be more difficult. But at 0530, there was no turning back. A disclaimer was given and the PAX of 15 began a mosey to…
WARMARAMA:
- 19 x SSH
- 17 x IST (@Gump seemed surprised by this number even though this has been a YHC standard for about 4 years. But we should all just be happy he’s actually paying attention)
- 15 x Mountain Climber
- 13 x Cotton Picker
- 11 x Merkin
Each man found a parking spot for the exercises that would follow during…
THE THANG:
Headlamps were required for the man who had 1 minute to locate a spider, capture in cup and return to holding container. This proved to be more difficult than originally imagined. The PAX will receive a Prayer For Judgment and this one won’t be held against them as there was light dew on the ground. As one man rotated to the hunt the remaining men used the curb for clock style reps of the following –
S – Spinning Squat (5 reps, then quarter turn)
P – Pivot Merkin (5 reps, then quarter turn)
I – Indian Run
D – Dizzy Dry Docks (5 reps, then quarter turn)
E – Eternal Balboas
R – Reverse Lunge
Penalty Burpees were done when the minute expired and no spider was caught. 8 for the hunter and 4 for the PAX. It was going so poorly an instructional moment was given, but that didn’t seem to help. Penalty Burpees were eventually lowered to 6 and 3 respectively since the suckage was strong in the gloom this morning. This was not intended to be a Burpee heavy beatdown.
Everyone took their turn and the mosey began to…
MARY:
- 15 x Pretzel Crunch
- 15 x Box Cutter
- 15 x The W
- 15 x Low Dolly
- Greatest American Hero with really bad vocals
COT and BOM!
THE SPIDER SKIN:
- Great effort today by the PAX. One minute on those exercises began to take its toll.
- Convergence on Saturday to celebrate another Highlands Anniversary. Multiple Qs, coffee and breakfast to follow. You’re encouraged to contribute to cover the costs as well as attend. Bring cash to @Disaster on Thursday or Zelle it to him at Eclayton@wellsfargo.com
- Three spots are open for Time Lapse. It’s a great event!
- Congrats to those who actually found a spider! Try it right when it gets dark at home before the dew covers the ground. My girls actually enjoyed doing this when they were younger. For those who need a little more instruction, here is a video of boys 12 and 7 years old to show you how it’s done. https://www.instructables.com/id/Spider-Hunting! /
- Not sure what to say about @Poutine who came back with a Lady Bug. It’s tempting to say that his passionate yelling in French to inspire the PAX to join the Time Lapse makes up for it. But nope.
- It was confessed later that a certain member of the PAX may or may not have led others to believe he captured a spider when in fact he did not. YHC will invoke clergy/client privilege and not reveal who that was. But in the future, a guilty conscience might be evidenced by someone doing penalty Burpees at the beginning of MARY. Seems to be a pattern.
Always an honor to lead the PAX!

Well, that was…interesting. @Alcatraz, I wish you could have seen some of our faces when you were explaining the spider hunt directions at the beginning. It was probably similar to the faces of students when I used to begin the unit on proofs using the fundamental trigonometric identities.
Your creativity and innovation is appreciated.
Iron Sharpens Iron
I had really hoped it would be easier to find them. Practice at home and next time you’ll see their glowing eyes everywhere!
My 2.1 has already expressed interest in pursuing this activity this weekend. His sister not so much.
Thanks for leading us today @Alcatraz. PAX please visit Slack to vote on whether this really registers as @Alcatraz’s weirdest beatdown ever (early results seem to support that it is!)
Already thought of a way to make this way better the next time!
I don’t even have any words.
And for the record all the spiders were released back into their habitat. Never let it be said that F3 isn’t a friend to the environment.
What about @Poutine’s ladybug?
and the Booshie French Lady Bug was released as well
