Burpee Mile – Hot August Morning
All Highlands BackblastsAugust 24th, 2017
15 brave men of MECA showed up for the third running of the “Burpee Mile”. Lots of mumble chatter before the beatdown about what the Burpee Mile is and debate about the optimal mix of burpees and running to yield optimal performance. Weather was still hot and humid but not as bad as it was the past week.
Disclaimer then slow mosey to the parking lot near the track.

THE THANG
Mosey to track for Burpee Mile –
- The Burpee Mile – 4 laps around the track and 40 burpees. It is up to each individual how they want to break this down. Official clock on the card table at the finish line. Times are recorded as you finish on the clipboard using the lighted pen by battery powered lantern light. Once done plank with arm & leg raises and bird dog until everyone finishes.
- The WW2 Sit Up Mile – Partner up based on finishing times (1&2, 3&4, etc). Same concept as the burpee mile with 80 WW2 sit ups by each partner. Team decision how best to break them down so partners can run together. Once done group Brinkley Bends until everyone finishes.

MOLESKIN:
- It has been fun seeing this workout evolve and the anticipation build with subsequent runnings of the Burpee Mile.
- With @Google gone the competition was fierce. @Winnebago had the fastest raw time but @Gordo won with the age adjustment beating @Hugo by 3 seconds. Impressive that 7 PAX were under 10 minutes.
- Results are age adjusted to account for the fact that running performance generally deteriorates after age 35. There are a number of studies out there but this one indicates that this deterioration averages 2 second/mile per year – https://fairmodel.econ.yale.edu/aging/runoth.htm
- Congrats to @Gordo. Final results –

- PR’s (Personal Records) are for those who have run the Burpee Mile more than once. The second partner mile in gave an opportunity for some F2 in addition to the running but some PAX were still wanting to record their times.
- Honored to lead this group of men and inspired by the effort. Look for another chance when the weather cools down.
- Titled this workout Hot August Morning in honor of a Neil Diamond album my parents played endlessly while I was growing up. “Hot August Night” is a double album recorded live at the Greek Theater in 1972 and has many of his best songs and finishes up with a great rendition of “Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-3EPbP0EUg.

Somebody explain to @Barrister who Neil Diamond is.
He is a Carolina grad so he knows “Sweet Caroline” very well.
Also @Hugo lied about his age so it wasn’t nearly as close as it looked. I think he’s 44.
Yep. Either poor handwriting on my end or the sweat smeared the “4” into a “9”. I know I look old but let’s not get carried away.
Your “44” looks just like @Disaster’s “49”. This changes your time to 9:34 and drops you from 2nd to 5th. At least I could read your name. @IronButterfly’s looked like hieroglyphics.
Nice work Highlands! I see you working!
You’re just happy that no one got within two minutes of your Burpee Mile record Surfer Boy!
This looks awesome. Do you guys do this monthly?
About once every three months @Farm, kind of like the Touchdown Beatdown. I’ll send you a heads up on Slack next time we have one scheduled. Part of the fun is seeing how everyone works the forty burpees in. It takes a little advance planning.
