Losing with Dignity

All Highlands Backblasts

July 18th, 2017 By Disaster

Twenty-three men ignored the warning signs and still decided to show up for another disastrous beatdown at Highland Creek Elementary School this morning. The weather was much cooler today and was a welcome break from the heat we have endured for most of July. After a rather lengthy disclaimer the PAX was off across the parking lot towards the middle school.

THE THANG

The PAX was instructed to choose a partner with similar athletic ability. YHC then threw the group a curveball by splitting up each set of partners into two separate teams. The goal was to keep the two teams as evenly matched as possible, but like most things YHC tries it didn’t really seem to work. Especially when most of the PAX forgot which team they were on by the end of the workout.

The two teams competed against each other in a series of different exercises, with the winning team watching the losing team perform five burpees after each event.

  1. Spider Man Merkins up the concrete steps (backwards) followed by a race around the island and back to the finish line. The PAX alternated between 30 squats and 30 lunges while they waited their turn on the steps.
  2. Mosey over to the side of the middle school. Take turns racing up the hill and doing 10 jump squats before racing back down. The PAX alternated between 30 merkins and 30 LBC while they waited their turn up the hill. Closest race of the day ended in a tie.
  3. Mosey up to track. Each team raced a full lap around (1/4 mile) with 15 Carolina Dry Docks thrown in along the way.
  4. Starting at the 50 yard line on the inside of the track, Cack-a-Lack-a-Choo Choo to the end zone near Ridge Road
  5. A new addition (thanks to Cub Scout Pack 148) the PAX lined up facing back down the football field towards the other end zone. The runner in the back had to alternate between hopping over a crouched over teammate and crawling between the legs of the next one (over/under). First team to the other end zone wins. No surprise that my eight year old cub scouts figured this one much faster than the PAX did today. Good try for a first attempt though.
  6. Mosey back down to the middle school parking lot. Bear Crawl race past two sets of light poles.

  1. Nice job by the PAX today. Despite some confusion over the roster construction this seemed to actually work out pretty well. Lots of sportsmanship out there, with the winning team frequently joining the losing team in the five burpees.
  2. After losing in the first race, @The Nanny seemed to conveniently appear on the winning team for the rest of the morning. I’m not suggesting any improprieties here, but the NCAA is rumored to be preparing an investigation.
  3. T-Claps to @Conchito who absolutely crushed the 400 meter run today. Even more impressive was that he finished well ahead of YHC only minutes after I had (incorrectly) lumped him into the stereotypical “slow team”. Well done sir. Stereotypical comment rescinded.
  4. @Pavarotti pointed out that although he was part of the losing team for most of the day, at least he was “losing with dignity”. As a Wake Forest alumni I can certainly relate!
  5. Welcome to FNG Brian Smith, and thanks to @Bling for sticking with him today. Not all of our beatdowns are this stupid Brian, so come back to see us again and you’ll get a nickname.
  6. Welcome back to former FNG Dave, now to be known as @WIldflower. Dave is new to Charlotte, arriving from Illinois “The Prairie State”. Way to show off that geography major @Gordo.
  7.  Lots of announcements today. The Shield will be held tonight starting at 8PM at @Grinder’s house. Beer is optional but is encouraged. @Sugar will be sharing his story tonight. Check the daily email for more details.
  8. F3 MECA baseball with the Kannapolis Intimidators is Thursday night at 7PM. Plenty of tickets still available. $10 gets you in the gate and includes $5 worth of food/drink vouchers which will be perfect for the Thirsty Thursday event. Bring your M and 2.0’s out for some fun and fellowship. Check the daily email for details on how to get tickets.
  9. HDHH this Friday night at 26 Acres to honor our brother @Google, who will be leaving us for the much more expensive real estate of Southern California at the end of the month. Happy Hour starts around 7PM, but @Google and @Chopper will likely be there much earlier. Drop by to say goodbye and to buy the man a beer or two.
  10. F3 Dads is this Saturday at 8AM at #Comanche. Bring your 2.0’s out for a kid friendly beatdown. Breakfast will be served afterwards, but you need to HC on the backblast to make sure there is enough food. Come out and show the little guys what F3 is all about.
  11. The Sign Up Genius is completely empty for the rest of the month and beyond. Please sign up to ‘Q’ if you haven’t done it in a while. As you saw today, if I can do this anyone can. Link is attached at the bottom of the daily email.
  12. I’m getting close to 1000 words so I’m cutting this off. Thanks to everyone who posted today. As always, it is an honor to lead you men and to be a part of the Highlands PAX. Well done.

  1. Great work, Disaster! I really just wanted to try the new login, but your lead and BB was worth a response too.

  2. Your @Disaster beatdowns are definitely getting less disastrous. I thought the Cub Scout relay at the end was a great addition and from my Fitbit heart rate the hardest. Like any teacher you just need to take into account the level of your students and the concepts you throw at them. The PAX tends to be remedial and the KISS principle should always be applied.
