After being out last week for Webelos Adventure Camp and recovery from said camp, YHC was eager to get back to the Boondocks.  The usual suspects were there: Brutus and Baby Face.  We set off quickly on what I called a running circuit, but Brutus likened to an ISIS tickle fight.  Then speculation began about what if ISIS tried to buy out F3; only Baby Face would contemplate such far-fetched fantasy.

The Distraction and Mis-Adventure

This plan was quickly abandoned and devolved into an exploratory run to a possible crime scene (arson) through sketchy East Charlotte alleys, with risky road crossings, Carolina Dry Docks on the front lawn of Sunrise Restaurant, electric police-tape barricades, a Fox News crew preparing to report, and WWII Sit Ups under the flags at the US Post Office.

See what happened was . . . shortly into the School Mile we noticed a lot of cars parked at the Middle School (normally there are none), Red Cross Emergency Shelter signs, a police car and the first of two news crews we would see.  I quickly put together the clues.  I told the guys the shelter was probably for the people who had been displaced in the apartment fire on Farm Pond Lane (saw this on the news last night).  Being technology and news deprived, Baby Face was jonesing to check out the damage in person.

So, after a quick Google search while we did LBCs in the dialysis center driveway, I pulled up directions to the apartments less than a mile away. It was a fast run there with our excitement, but we had difficulty finding the small alley that led to the apartments.  So, we ran down a dead end road . . . spooky, then back behind some business where we found a smashed-up minivan with the passenger door wide open.  I kept waiting for some sleepy soul to jump out of it, startled by us running by (twice).

Eventually, we found the driveway to the three-story apartment building, but were thwarted by our efforts to get near when we encountered police tape and a patrol vehicle.  We did manage to get a few lame pictures though.

Somehow we managed to get a good workout in there, and were thoroughly drenched in sweat at 6:15.

So, then it was Coffeeteria inside the Y until 6:55 where we ran into several friends, new and old: Romulus, Alfredo and his dad, Father Mulcahy, the TED Talks guy (he has a voice for radio), and Larry.

What We Learned Today

  1. There is an “authentic” Mexican restaurant just off Albemarle Road on Farm Pond. Who knew?
  2. If you only know of two news events, they must be connected.  By the way Jake’s Good Eats is closing.  Could Jake be involved with the apartment fire?
  3. Juan and John are the same name.
  4. The Save-A-Lot grocery store was able to compete with Bi-Lo, but not Harveys.
  5. AAA Auto complex seems oddly out of place on Albemarle Road.  That is one pretty piece of property.
  6. Alfredo is into some rapper named Flak Dibbity Do, or something like that.  We think his real name maybe Joe Smith.  Babyface thinks the original Morman, Joseph Smith, was probably called Joe by his buds. I think they called him Seph.  Wonder what his F3 name would have been?
  7. Honor Thy Thug is a part of a series by Wahida Clark.  Be on the lookout for New York Times Bestseller Justify My Thug as well.
  8. Texting “Happy Birthday” to someone makes balloons appear when they open the text, even if it’s not their birthday. The phone knows that we don’t know that it is faking that it doesn’t know more than we think it knows.  AI will take over the world someday. #stealthylike
