7 men gathered for breakfast to talk about the idols that sneak into our lives. The discussion was based on the first chapter of Kyle Idleman’s book “Gods at War”. Specifically, Idleman says:

• Idolatry isn’t just one of many sins; rather it’s the one great sin that all others come from. So if you start scratching at whatever struggle you’re dealing with, eventually you’ll find that underneath it is a false god. Until that god is dethroned, and the Lord God takes his rightful place, you will not have victory
• There are a hundred million different symptoms, but the issue is always idolatry.
• We may not have the god of commerce, the god of agriculture, the god of sex, or the god of the hunt. Be we do have portfolios, automobiles, adult entertainment, and sports.
• We often trade the Creator God for a god of our own creation.
  • A house that we constantly upgrade.
  • A promotion with a corner office
  • A body that is toned and fit
  • We work hard at molding and creating our golden calves.
  • This means we could say this about anything. You could take any issue, anything someone devoted anything to, and make it out to be idolatry. Exactly! Anything at all can become an idol once it becomes a substitute for God in our lives.
• Idols are not immoral, they are amoral. They aren’t good or bad until we put enough importance on any of them that they take God’s spot at top priority in our life

There was lots of discussion around our idols…children, pride, success, pornography, and, yes…in some cases, even F3.
