Men’s Bible Study: “Resisting Temptation – Lessons from Daniel”
1. Opening Prayer
Facilitator: Ask a volunteer to pray, seeking God’s strength to resist temptation and wisdom to stand firm. (e.g., “Lord, help us recognize temptation and give us the courage to follow You faithfully.”)
1. Icebreaker & Topic Introduction
Icebreaker Question (2 minutes): Quick share (30 seconds each): “What’s one temptation you’ve faced recently that was tough to resist, big or small?”
Topic Tie-In (3 minutes): Facilitator shares: We live in a world bombarding us with temptations—ads pushing materialism, screens fueling envy or lust, or pressure to cut corners for success. Daniel faced intense temptation in Babylon’s lavish, idolatrous culture but stood firm. As men, we’re called to resist with faith, not just willpower. Let’s see how Daniel’s story guides us.
1. Scripture Reading & Discussion (20 minutes)
Read Aloud (3 minutes): Split into two readers for these passages:
• Daniel 1:8-16 (Daniel’s resolve against temptation): “But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine… He asked the chief official for permission… ‘Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.’” Daniel resists the lure of indulgence while honoring God.
• James 1:12-15 (Temptation’s source and reward): “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because… that person will receive the crown of life… Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire…”
Probing Discussion Questions: Keep it vulnerable and personal, avoiding tangents.
1. Resolving to Stand (Daniel 1): Daniel “resolved” not to give in to Babylon’s temptations. What’s one area of temptation (e.g., greed, anger, lust, pride) where you need to make a firm resolution? How can you practically set boundaries to stay faithful?
2. Temptation’s Pull (James 1:14): James says temptation comes from our own desires. What’s a personal desire that makes you vulnerable—maybe chasing status, scrolling endlessly, or bending truth? How can you replace that desire with something God-honoring?
3. Faith Over Culture (Daniel 1:9-12): Daniel trusted God’s way over Babylon’s riches, even risking rejection. When have you faced pressure to conform (at work, home, or socially)? How can trusting God’s plan help you resist those moments?
4. Perseverance’s Reward (James 1:12): James promises a “crown of life” for those who endure. How does focusing on God’s eternal reward change how you face daily temptations? Share a time resisting temptation strengthened your faith or character.
5. Application & Closing Prayer (7 minutes)
Quick Commitments: Each man shares one specific action to resist temptation this week (e.g., “I’ll limit screen time to avoid distractions” or “Pray daily for strength against anger”). Jot these down for accountability next session.
Closing Prayer (4 minutes): Facilitator prays: Thank God for His strength and Daniel’s example. Ask for discernment to spot temptation, discipline to resist, and unity as brothers. End with the Lord’s Prayer together.
