There’s a famous scene in the movie, “Glengarry Glen Ross” with two lines most have heard of, especially those in sales. “ABC – Always Be Closing” and “Coffee Is For Closers”
We’re all selling something everyday: Our Business, Our Brand, Our Faith, Something. Whether we are any good at it depends on our choices. Life is tough and we all have emotional moments, stress, anger, sadness, happiness, joy, peace, strength, confusion, doubt, hope…you name it, we experience it. But how we sell it depends on our choices.
I have a saying I live by:
“Flags get thrown and whistles get blown, in the Game of Life you have to adapt to the way the game is being called”
Be flexible, leave room to adjust!
In the scene previously mentioned, Alec Baldwin’s character flips a chalk board with the famous ABC acronym on one side and AIDA on the other. We know the ABC’s, but a refresher may be needed for the AIDA
Attention
Interest
Decision
Action
Our choices are our actions. Everything is building up to it. What has your Attention? Is it moving the Interest meter? Will it be a good Decision when you take Action?
We got our refresher today and went back to the elementary basics. The ABC’s. What did we learn?
We learned that sometimes in this life you may be a little late, a little lost, but if we trust our instincts, and seek out our team, we can find our way most of the time, just ask Private Ryan.
We learned to adapt. Things break and you have to improvise, just like in the three legged race. Directions aren’t communicated the best (especially from QIC…think burpee leap frog), but you trust your knowledge and carry on and finish the race!
We learned that it takes everyone on the same page, pulling together to achieve victory. Tombstone dropped out of the Tug-O-War, briefly, and the team folded. We NEEDED his brute strength ????!
I learned we need to be challenged at times. We need to take a break at times (hope everyone is enjoying their vacations). We need to remember to pause and take in the joys of life, like when we were kids, competing in a field day with friends, taking a respite from the real world, the real stresses and the real emotions. We need to rely on our teams, wherever that may be, but especially our families.
Choose to sell them joy.
Thank you for allowing me to lead today. I would choose any of you men to be on my team, anytime, because I know you will help close whatever deal may be presented. Hope you enjoyed your coffee this a.m., as you all CLOSED a great morning of activities where we all won just by taking action and choosing to get out of bed and make ourselves better, because you know:
Coffee Is For Closers
PS – If you are reading this, and we’re not able to attend this morning, hit me up the next time we are at coffeeteria, a cup of joe is on me.
