Who Are These People?
All Boondocks BackblastsOctober 31st, 2017
These neighbors of yours? Who are they? What’s their story(s)? Perhaps you’ll never know. But some of them will be giving away free candy tonight. People are pretty much ruled by their expectations …and we are typically simply trying to get through life without annoying people via encroaching on their expectations. And whereas our neighbors don’t normally expect you to show up at their door asking for candy (or for any other reason) …tonight they do expect you to show up at their house. Why don’t we know the people who live around us? There are a bunch of people who lived in other era’s of history, and we really don’t have the opportunity to know them right now; and then there are all the people living in the various other places around the world – and even if it was your full time job to travel the world and know people – there’s no way you could substantively meet everyone and thoroughly get to know all of them.
So why not get to know the people in your neighborhood. Even if you really really really don’t want to KNOW them – perhaps you could simply strive to become less of a stranger to them and vice versa (e.g. take a stroll around your neighbor on a night when you know the % chance of people expecting to see you – and superficially greet you – will be higher than normal …and if you’re really bold wave at them when they look at you …and if you’re really really bold say “hello” …and if you’re really really really bold say, “my name is _______, and I live over on _______ street!” …basically pretend to be Buddy the Elf …or, if you’re not that happy, pretend to be Forest Gump – – – > both are outgoing chaps in their own regard). One theory as to why we don’t make an effort to get to know our neighbors is because we are “so full” …we seem to have lost any serious sense of our neediness for knowing our neighbors. Read Hannah Coulter’s memoir, and contemplate how her view of neighborliness is different from yours. …Who fasts anymore? Is that even a thing nowadays? …Dan says, “fasting is the bulimic act of ridding ourselves of our fullness to attune our senses to the mysteries that swirl in and around us. Perhaps our neighbors are amongst the greatest mysteries that swirl around us.”
And – in case you were wondering – we did work out this morning.
We ran around a little bit, and did SSH x 20 IC, Mtn C’s x 10 IC, Peter Parker & Parker Peter x 10 [ea.] IC, and Monkey H’s x 20 IC. We ran to the Middle School & did a Bear Crawl, Lunge Walk, & Burpee Circuit – followed by a B2W, Ppl’s Chair, Donkey Circuit …and then QuadPhillyDogs …and then Mary, and then Dips, Incline M’s, and Derkins, and then More Mary and done.
