ANNOUNCEMENT AT COFFEE

Visited by Sydney, the match coordinator at Cabarrus Big Brothers Big Sisters to talk about mentoring young people, and the need for good men to find 20 minutes a week to change their lives. Boston, Loveboat, Luthor, Ezekiel, and myself are all Big Brothers right now and can speak to the program. The program doesn’t just work in theory, we track actual outcomes and the results are overwhelmingly successful. Our Littles graduate, when they otherwise wouldn’t. They succeed, where they otherwise wouldn’t. And they avoid incarceration where they otherwise wouldn’t. We get to them before it’s too late, and provide something that’s missing in their lives. Something that’s simple that you and I take it for granted and probably don’t think would make a difference. That something is just being there and being a positive male role model. Caring, asking how their day was. Picking up a ball and throwing it with them.

We are looking for more Bigs over the summer to start in the fall. Men like us. Women like our wives. High schoolers like our kids. 20 minutes a week that will change a life before it’s too late to save it, and will impact you just as much.

Please consider it, and talk to one of us already in the program if you want to learn more for you or if you have someone you think would be good.

MOLESKIN

Man.

Where do I start? Where do I finish? And how do I get there? These are not just the questions that plague me in life, but the questions that burn inside me as I try to tell the story of the greatest day, the way it deserves to be told. A day of creativity, courage, resilience, and persistence. A day that our son’s sons will sing songs about. A day where one man stood his ground against seemingly insurmountable odds, and triumphed. A day that only history can judge, and will do so justly. A day greater than the 2021 Member Guest Championship.

May Day.

The day started like any other, but would end up as anything but. A crisp cool morning. 45° on the thermostat, but something colder was in the air. None of us knew it yet, but that was because of a coming storm. A storm that no meteorologist could have predicted.

11 other men, most of whom would later be the most vocal critiques, stood in that circle and made that decision with me. No information was offered at all, not even a contribution from the very person who recruited the FNG. Not only did NOBODY offer any substance when asked, when I said “I guess it’s pretty much Girl Dad then?” you ALL AGREED. You signed your names on that dotted line next to mine, in blood. Many of you even encouraging me…”Yeah that’s a good one!”, “I like that!”, etc. Even at coffee after the deed was done, not even a hint of an issue. “See you tomorrow Girl Dad!”, “Glad to have you join us Girl Dad!”

And then, later in the morning after all the lazies began to stir in their little fartsacks, Neverland asked the question heard ‘round the slack world…”So what’d you name him?”

Soon after the answer, I immediately saw a flurry of activity – “BayCity is typing” – across the bottom of my screen, scurrying back and forth like the rats you all are. Instantly my street smarts took over and my guard went up, bracing for the first impact BOOM! The obvious attack from the front, from BCR, which I easily parried. BOOM! It was just a diversion, so I could get flanked by some dipshit Bucs fan named Circuit Rider with a sucker punch, which I absorbed like a man. Then a horde of locusts descended upon me, like the Viet Cong during the Tet Offensive. “Awwww that sucks!”, “He’s NEVER gonna come back now!” you whimpered from your quivering lips between tampon changes.

I am powerful, but I am also just one man. Taking shot after shot, I found myself down on one knee just covering my head and hoping for the best. For the first time in my life, I was in a battle of wits and I was doubting myself. I was on the ropes. I began to lower my hands and accept my fate “Fine just rename him and tell me what it is”. But right in that moment of surrender when the doubt had crept into my mind, I found a glimmer of hope. Hops came in with an insult so brutal and so specific, so exaggerated that I knew y’all were full of shit. In your overwhelming attempt at power, I found your weakness. My fists clinched with resolve once again as I worked my way out of the corner with body shots. CHOP! CHOP! CHOP! Like Rocky working in the meat freezer. But it didn’t stop your attacks. I wasn’t out of the fight, but so much damage had been done that I needed a miracle. I cried out “LORD I NEED YOU!!!” But He didn’t respond. Rather He did not respond with words, but with actions as He so often does. Instead He sent me a warrior. His mightiest warrior. His Mightiest Mouse. A champion for Mayweather. A champion…for Justice. With gravel in my gut, and grit in my eye, I fought like a man possessed. “Fuck that, the name stays!” I cried as I threw a series of punches, at first defensive shots that eventually became offensive. I was no longer fighting for me, or even for Girl Dad. I was fighting for Hansel. For Rambo. For Sundollar. For Loveboat. For Firechicken. For Circuit Rider. For Bay City Roller. For KRISPY TIGER. And for all the other guys with horrible names that wake up every day despite those horrible names, put their boots on and put one foot in front of the other and make their way in this world.

And that’s when it happened.

Girl. Dad. Enters. The mother fucking Chat.

“What’s up bitches, it’s me Girl Dad. I love it! I’ll be back every Wednesday!”

No one expected me to still be standing, but there I was. Eyes swollen shut. Blood flowing  from my nose and lip, knuckles bruised and scarred from my effective counter punches. Dick swinging down between my ankles. Breath rapid, but purposeful. Eyes wild with fury. Pheromones on full blast like the AC in your car after sitting in a parking lot on a hot July afternoon. A sexual Tyrannosaurus. Standing over a heap of your lifeless bodies. Victorious, as unlikely as it once seemed.

A great American comeback story. Some say the greatest.

There are plenty of moments we would all love to go back and re-do in our lives. But life doesn’t work that way. However, when you look back at it those “mistakes” were actually important waypoints on the road to becoming exactly who you are today. We get caught up in the thread when it’s the tapestry that matters. Don’t spend your life trying to re-do what’s done. The time we spend trying to take them back is wasted time. Own it, make the best of it, and keep moving forward. Anything else is the coward’s way.

I’m reminded of the parable of the Zen Master, which we should all consider in our daily lives.

A boy receives a horse as a gift, and villagers say “How wonderful!” The Zen master says “We’ll see”.

The boy falls off the horse, breaks his leg, and villagers say “How terrible!” The master says “We’ll see”.

Soon, a war begins. The army conscripts young men for the war, but the boy cannot go due to his injury. Villagers say “How wonderful!” The master says “We’ll see”.

Mayweather names Girl Dad. The villagers say “How terrible!”

We’ll see…
