Forced Exploration
All BackBlasts BackblastsMay 12th, 2020
Relegated from the elementary school due to a Covid-related facilities closure, seven of Highlands finest gathered in The Gloom of the Highland Creek Golf Course parking lot for the first (official) boot camp at our new (albeit temporary) home.
YHC was proud to take the Q for this forced go-round, and as I thought up beatdown possibilities it occurred to me that this might be an opportunity. So often, we gather at the school, we mosey to the bus lot, fun is had, we circle back up for Mary and then we go home. This change could force us to explore outside our usual comfort zones and discover new areas of our home base to enjoy.
As 5:30 struck a disclaimer was given, emphasizing the need to maintain some distance and stating that, while it didn’t appear it would be needed, we would be breaking into groups if more than 10 Pax showed.
We then moseyed around the parking lot and down to the cart shed for…
Warmarma (IC)
- SSH x19
- IST x17
- Weed Picker x15
- Windmill x13
- Mountain Climber x11
- Merkins x9
The Thang
We then moseyed down the cart path/greenway toward the bridge at the bottom, pausing after we crossed to pay the five burpee toll.
We continued our mosey onto the greenway around the big pond. We stopped at the first drainage area and all grabbed a rock for 10 reps (IC) of
- Curls
- Overhead Press
- Skull Crushers
Once again we moseyed, taking in the beautiful morning. We wrapped around the loop by the playground for some ladder work at the small hill. Bear crawl up, jog down. 6:1 ladder with Carolina Dry Docks at the top and Squats at the bottom.
The mosey continued to the Pump House, where we stopped and did 10 LBCs in cadence. We then continued onto the cart path between 17 and 18. As we got halfway across, YHC had the Pax stop and head down the big hill. Special attention was paid to make sure that @focker didn’t try to escape via the secret path into our neighborhood.
We ran to the top of the hill and did WWI situps and then returned down for merkins. Another 6:1 ladder.
After a 10-count, we continued our mosey past the 18th tee box and up the path into Master’s Hill, where we did five more burpees. As @pavarotti noted, we hadn’t crossed any bridge. This was true, but a toll was needed none-the-less.
We continued up McTaggart Lane to the cul-de-sac in front of @pavarotti’s old crib, where we did 10 reverse crunches in cadence. We then continued onto the parkway and made our way back toward the golf club.
We then chose to honor some of our Pax that hadn’t made it out this morning. We stopped at the entrance to Master’s Hill for 10 muscle-ups on the wall (shout-out to @glock). After a mosey up the next hill and across the crosswalk (saying hello to @barrister along the way), we proceeded to the rail off Shelley Ave. across from the school, where we did the infamous @alcatraz-inspired ladder of decline merkins, incline merkins, dips, and air presses for four rounds. You know how the math works (maybe). We also took that opportunity to heckle another group of men accelerating their fitness at the school.
We then headed back to the Golf Club, where we randomly picked up @ONJ, for…
Mary (IC)
- Pretzel Crunch (x15, each side)
- Squirm (x15)
- Poutine low flutter (x15)

Circle of Man (COM)

Thanks for to everyone who made it out, including those across the street that intended to make it out. I’ve got surgery in the morning but hope to be back in The Gloom soon with a clean bill of health to boot.
I’ll say it again: it feels so much better back in The Gloom. The Zoom did its job during our shutdown, but nothing compares to sweating and chatting next to your brothers.
I really think we should use any time away from the school(s) to broaden the parts of the neighborhood we haven’t used much of. I know the hill between 17 and 18 was a hit. As that stretch of path sits as a dam for the pond, I christen it the Dam Hill.
Prayers for all those leading us in our efforts to work through the crisis we are currently in, both from a medical and economic standpoint.
Prayers for @murdock’s 2.1 and his family as they undergo a medical procedure tomorrow.
