All Highlands Backblasts

February 13th, 2020 By Disaster

YHC showed up bright and early at 515AM this morning so there would be plenty of time to set up today’s prop-filled beatdown. Unfortunately the elevated winds were not on board with the plan and sent the flimsy paper tabs and cheap dollar store cones flying around the bus lot. Apparently masking tape doesn’t stick to wet asphalt…. who knew? After chasing down the props Plan B became using the remnants from the cinder block graveyard to weight down the exercise tabs. By the time I got back to the parking lot it was 531AM and the PAX were starting to get antsy about my whereabouts. @Sandman was even threatening to give me a new, less desirable nickname (or a really cool one depending on your point of view). Still out of breath from lugging the “massive” five pound blocks I gave a weak but serviceable disclaimer and then we were off for a quick mosey back to the bus lot for:

WARMARAMA

THE THANG

The PAX were instructed to count off by eights, which worked particularly well since there were sixteen men in addition to the Q. The task immediately identified the “lesser-math inclined” participants (cough, @Chowder, cough) but luckily former math instructor @Powerball was there to set everyone straight. We moseyed over to the Dropcloth 200 (TM) track where eight stations were laid out in a circle inside the track. Each team of two was assigned to a station as follows:

  1. Pull Ups X 1
  2. Lunges X 2 (each leg)
  3. Merkins X 3
  4. LBC X 5
  5. Dips X 3
  6. Air Squats X 4
  7. CDD X 3
  8. Reverse Crunch X 5 (ugh!)

Partners would complete their exercise and then rotate clockwise around the circle to the next station. After completing a full set of eight, partners would run a lap around the circle and then return to their original station. The second set would escalate up by the same multiple as your lap (Pull Ups X 2, Lunges X 4, Merkins X 6, etc.) hence the name – Escalator Workout. The goal was to complete ten laps, thus reaching a full scale of exercises on the final lap (Pull Ups X 10, Lunges X 20, Merkins X 30, etc.) Thanks to some initial confusion about the rules (cough @Ambassador cough) most teams only made it to lap seven before time was called. The PAX helped to gather up the cards and cinder block pieces and then headed back down to the main parking lot for MARY

MARY

  1. Low Flutter IC X 15
  2. The W IC X 13 (one for each Demon Deacon win this year…suck it Tar Heels!)

MOLESKIN

  1. Today’s beatdown was yet another crazy F3 experiment that I dreamed up during a slow moment at work (as opposed to those exciting thrill rides that the municipal bond market is normally known for!). I thought it worked out pretty well (except for the wind) and got some good feedback from the PAX. We’ll try it again later this year, maybe with Low Flutters replacing the Reverse Crunch.
  2. I originally assigned the teams to different stations hoping to keep the PAX from bunching up. But for some reason six of the eight teams slowly congregated together into one big twelve man group by the end of the workout. The lunges and reverse crunches did tend to slow things down somewhat, but rumor has it that @Brinkley was secretly stirring up some sort of mutiny against the Q. Don’t listen to him. It’s all lies. That flag incident was purely an accident.
  3. As the Q I had my choice of joining up with any of the eight teams and for some incredibly stupid reason I chose @Glock’s group. I spent the rest of the morning trying to chase him down. Bad decision.
  4. Congratulations to @Dutch Boy and @Gordo who appeared to have the fastest team today. Well done. And stay away from @Brinkley and his bad vibes.
  5. The Passport Challenge starts on March 1 so go to Slack to sign up. You have 60 work days (not Sundays) to join a workout at all 14 AO’s. Cost is ten dollars. Winners receive a really nifty patch designed by @Poutine’s 2.0 so don’t miss out. @Snowsuit is already signed up. Well done.
  6. Also Time Laps. May 15-16 at the NCWWC. Teams are already being formed so contact @Barrister if you have interest in joining us.
  7. Thanks to everyone who posted today. It is always an honor to lead you men. See you in the gloom!
