So You Want to be a Spartan…Or…How to Carry Heavy Objects Around a Parking Lot (A Beginner’s Guide)

  • When: 02/01/2019
  • QIC: @BeetleJuice
  • The PAX: @Habs, @Hokie-Pokie, @Sausage, @Terrible Towel, @Yellowcake, @DIAL-UP, @Airsoft, @Spauldini, @Jordache, @Hop_Hunter, @Berlin, @Hong.Kong.Phooey, @Dr. Seuss, @Talladega, @4-wide, @Shooter, @Torch, @Amway, @Big Blue, @Buck

21 PAX broke free from the warm embrace of the Fartsack and joined YHC out in the crisp, 20 degree Gloom.  YHC had dropped a few hints via Slack regarding the manner of this morning’s Beatdown, but few, if any (including YHC) really knew what to expect.

A number of MEN had recently signed up to test themselves at the Spartan Sprint in April.  YHC figured the best way to prepare was to incorporate a few of the standard Spartan “obstacles” into the Beatdown.  Unfortunately, YHC did not have the means to build walls, or dig ditches or light things on fire… Lucky for the PAX, cinder blocks and buckets full of rocks are completely doable, easily transported and full of THE SUCK.

Here’s how it went down:

5:30am Disclaimer Given…did I mention that I’m not a professional!?

WARM UP

Short mosey across the parking lot.

Circle Up

  • SSH x 10
  • Windmills x 10 (IC)
  • Imperial Storm Troopers x 10 (IC)…YHC morphed his into Hillbillies…whoops!
  • Arm Circles FWD & BKWRD
  • Michael Phelps (need those arms stretched out good)

THE THANG

Mosey to the bricks.  Collect said bricks.  Return to the Parking Lot.

In addition to the bricks, 5 buckets full of rocks (and other weight-giving items) were waiting, giving the buckets a weight ranging from 60lbs to 90lbs.

Now was the time for the PAX to “Pick Their Poison”.  Would it be 1 Bucket Full of SUCK or 2 Frozen Cinder Blocks?  The “good news” was that no matter the decision, everyone would get to experience both by the end!

Partner up and Line up at the Curb.

  • Round 1:
    • Partner 1 carries bucket/cinder blocks across parking lot
      • Complete 5 burpees
    • While awaiting Partner 1, Partner 2 alternates between Squats & WW2s
    • When partner 1 returns, Switch and repeat.
  • Round 2
    • Partner 1 carries bucket/cinder blocks across parking lot
      • Complete 10 burpees
    • While awaiting Partner 1, Partner 2 alternates between Squats & WW2s
    • When partner 1 returns, Switch and repeat
  • Round 3
    • Partner 1 carries bucket/cinder blocks across parking lot
      • Complete 15 burpees
    • While awaiting Partner 1, Partner 2 alternates between Squats & WW2s
    • When partner 1 returns, Switch and repeat
  • Round 4
    • Partner 1 carries bucket/cinder blocks across parking lot
      • Complete 20 burpees
    • While awaiting Partner 1, Partner 2 alternates between Squats & WW2s
    • When partner 1 returns, Switch and repeat
  • Round 5
    • Partner 1 carries bucket/cinder blocks across parking lot
      • Complete 25 burpees
    • While awaiting Partner 1, Partner 2 alternates between Squats & WW2s
    • When partner 1 returns, Switch and repeat
  • Rounds 6 – 10 (or until time was called)
    • Back down the burpee Ladder. 20, 15, 10, 5
    • Those who had buckets going up swapped with those that had Cinder Blocks.

Return Bricks to their original resting place and Gentlemen’s Mosey back to Mary

MARY

YHC’s time management skills were a bit lacking this morning.  By the time all PAX returned the bricks and made it back to the cars, it was 6:13am!!! …Good news was, all the WW2s during The Thang were more than enough to satisfy…if you didn’t get enough Mary there, that was your own problem…or at least that was the consensus of the PAX.

COT – Big thanks to Buck for offering to Pray us out…not YHC’s strongest area.

Prayer Requests – All unspoken.  YHC apologizes for this gaff…in my haste, I forgot to ask aloud.

MOLESKIN – The moans, groans and grunts were in full swing this morning.  Despite all that, the PAX were all on fire this morning.

  • At one point, the PAX were treated to the sight of @Dial-up at a full sprint with a bucket hoisted up on his shoulder.
  • Poor @Hokie-Pokie pulled the Short Straw and ended up partner-less, but somehow still managed to put us all to a bit of shame. Strong work!
  • @BigBlue, the bona fide Burpee King, showed off why he gets to wear the crown.
  • @Berlin, @Jordache, @Torch, @Sausage & @Dr. Seuss were All Go, No Quit…basically sprinting their way across the parking lot, buckets and blocks in tow!
  • @Hong.Kong.Phooey had to be wondering what he had gotten himself into, seeing as how this was his 1st visit to the Dawg House. Represented Harrisburg with a very strong showing!
  • @Habs, @Spauldini, @Talladega, @Airsoft, @4-Wide, @Amway & @Buck all made it look like we were just out there Warming Up…guess I’ll have to put more stuff in the buckets next time to slow you all down a bit!!
  • @TerribleTowel, @Yellowcake, @Hop_Hunter and @Shooter might need to be checked for Performance Enhancing Drugs…all YHC could see of them was the blur as they shot past me.

FINAL THOUGHTS –

I haven’t Q’ed a workout since November 2018 when I led 3 MEN through the Gloom.  Shortly after that Q, I went through a period of “The Blah’s”.  I was stressed out at work, I was fighting a cold that seemed to last forever, I was in the process of trying to buy a new house…my world became a mess quickly and it seemed to just stay that way.

@Talladega noticed my multiple absences and reached out to me on Slack.  Strangely enough, that’s all it took to get my head right.  After talking to him for just a few minutes, I made the decision to stop wallowing and start fixing.  As it turns out, just forcing yourself out of bed and into the Gloom is One Hell of a Cure!  So if you notice someone is missing, please check in with them…it may be all they need to get their motivation back.  It’s just another way to Pick Up the Six!

Fast forward to this morning, and I was presented with challenge of leading 20 MEN through the Gloom…a stark difference from 3!  It was a challenge to say the least, but it was also an amazing thing to see.  The growth that is occurring at The Dawg House is just awesome!  Let’s keep it up and let’s keep picking up the six…wherever and however it’s needed!

It was an honor to lead this morning and it is an honor to follow each and every one of you!

See you in The Gloom!
