The Helton WOD

All All MECA Backblasts

July 19th, 2016 By Buckwheat

15 men including a mad scientist from #Isotope who brought an FNG and a #kotter along with him descended upon the Tradition AO on this warm (73 degrees), very humid (98%) morning. I informed the Pax that we would be honoring a fallen soldier today in U.S. Air Force Security Forces 1st Lt. Joseph D. Helton who was K.I.A. while fighting for our country on 09/08/2009, near Baghdad, Iraq, when an IED detonated near his vehicle. @Forgotten Jelly recently shared a list of Crossfit Hero WOD beatdowns and some modified F3 versions of those workouts. We decided to introduce the Pax to a few of these periodically. Today’s beatdown was in memory of 1st Lt. Helton.

Short disclaimer given and we got started with a short mosey to the back parking lot for warm-o-rama.

Cotton Picker X10IC

The workout is simple in concept. 800M run followed by 45 cinderblock squats and 30 burpees. Repeato X3 for time. Route explained. While explaining, I unintentionally added a few hundred extra meters. Good thing @Forgotten Jelly created the route last night and recognized my mistake. Route correction was made and we were off.

This is not the most creative beatdown, but it was quite effective. With 90 burpees, any beatdown will be tough. I’m pretty sure there was a good bit of jelly lubing on those burpees though. Regardless, I probably lost three pounds out there this morning with all the sweating I was doing.

@Cinderblock was killing it, despite not posting for like six months. #Kotters #STRONG. @Mr. Belding and @El Paso tore it up too. Well done men. @Mr. Belding briefly Q’d a small group of finishers while the six was finishing up. However, @Dingo noticed that a lot of our cinderblocks were busted and suggested those who were finished take the broken ones over to the dumpster across the lot. Thanks to those of you who helped with this while half of #teambacon (me & @Pong) finished up.

Mosey to front lot for MARY:

The W X10IC
Pretzel Crunch X10IC each leg
Low Dolly X20IC

COT- Tribute to 1st Lt. Helton was made.

Name-o-rama included a little humor with the naming of FNG Tennant who was from Farmville, Virginia. YHC happened to be familiar with that small town as the home of Longwood College. Leave it to the Tradition Pax to come up with the nickname 7 inches in honor of Longwood. That was veto’d as Tennant is in campus ministry at UNCC. Instead, he was named after a tractor, Kubota.

BOM- Thanks for taking us out today, @Mr. Belding.

Sweaty Moleskin:
1) It was an honor to lead this morning, men. Especially while leading a beatdown with some purpose/meaning behind it.
2) Thoughts and prayers go out to all members of our armed forces domestic and abroad who are serving and sacrificing for our great nation including those that have served in the past, several of whom have unfortunately paid the ultimate price. Thoughts and prayers also to all law enforcement officers and their families during these difficult times of senseless violence in our country. Lets hope and strive for peace and better relations between all communities and their respective law enforcement agencies.
3) Good to see you @Cinderblock. #Welcomebackkotters.
4) Welcome home, @Mutant. It’s good to see you haven’t forgotten where you started ;-).
5) @Sensei- You have gotten faster my friend. Keep up the good work!
6) Thanks for visiting Tradition @Silverbullet and for bringing your friends @El Paso and FNG Kubota. Sorry we didn’t have a lot of variety today.
7) Strong work today everyone, except any of you who may have jelly lubed some of the burpees ;-).
8) @Forgotten Jelly- Thanks for sending out the Hero WOD’s and for creating the 800M route last night. We can have some fun with some of these, maybe mix a few of them up to break up the monotony.
9) Anyone looking for some additional running @Isotope hosts a 7:15PM run starting at Discovery Place Kids in Huntersville and ending with beer somewhere. Thanks for the invite, @Silverbullet!
10) Spartan Super is August 6 in Asheville. @Dingo and @Forgotten Jelly will be there. Anyone gonna join them? It’s cheap…
11) Have a great day everyone!
12) Check out this epic BB from Metro. This is pretty much how I feel every time I do a cruise. I need BB writing class from the author of this one. Hilarious! http://f3nation.com/2016/07/18/streamofconciousness/

  1. Sound off below.

  2. Thanks for the Q this morning @buckwheat. It’s always nice to do a WOD in honor of a fallen hero.

The naming discussion for Kubota was hilarious. Tradition at its finest!

  3. I didn’t enjoy that buckwheat. You suck.

    I’m also a little sad that “7inches” didn’t stick?? #bestnameever #missedoutongreatness

  4. @BW- good Q….good BB too

  5. Great Q. On a normal day you would’ve gotten a BS real quick for 90 burpees but it puts it all in perspective when it’s in honor of a service member. But still it wouldnt be a beatdown without some good mumblechatter berating the Q. Thanks for having me, real good crowd down at tradition, I don’t care what they say about y’all, y’all are good guys ;). I’ll definitely be back, and hope to see y’all up our way too. Welcome Kubota!

  6. To the United States Air Force!! Go Falcons!! Hoooyah!!

So, I was one of those jelly lubing. I’m not going to lie. 9 days from 50, my lungs are not where they used be. This is my #14 F3 workout and I feel awesome and I have Mr. McFeely to thank for introducing me to the Tradition Pax and the Tradition Pax for the awesome fellowship. Some people dream of winning the lotto. Some want to be POTUS. Me, I dream of one day doing 100% of every part of Buckwheat’s beatdown!!
