Riding Solo in Unfamiliar Territory
All All MECA BackblastsMay 23rd, 2016
I traveled to our nation’s capital for some R&R with the M and decided to run the 5k over to Theodore Roosevelt Island (TRI) from our hotel for a good ‘ol fashion beatdown on Saturday morning only to find an empty AO and a whole lotta rain…I asked myself the question; Does it still count as a F3 workout if you are the only one that shows up??? I figured since I ran 3 miles there might as well get it done.
Mosey to the parking lot for the disclaimer (yes I said it in my head)
Warm up
- SSH 25x
- Imperial Storm Troopers 25x
- Windmill 25x
- Merkins 25x
- Squats 25x
Mosey over the bridge to TRI and up to the monument.
The Thang
Having never been here before and no plans for Q’ing that morning I had to improvise, 16 marble benches in front of the Teddy Roosevelt monument became the 16 stations of pain… Each exercise was followed by a full lap around the monument.
- 20 incline merkins + 1 lap around
- 20 step-ups (each leg) + 1 lap around
- 20 decline merkins + 1 lap around
- 20 box (bench) jumps + 1 lap around
- 20 LBC + 1 lap around
- 20 squat jumps + 1 lap around
- 20 mountain climbers + 1 lap around
- 20 squirm + 1 lap around
Repeato
- Bear crawl across and over each bridge at each side of the monument followed by a full lap run (2x)
Mosey back to the bridge for Mary on the bridge
- LBC 30x
- Low dolly 30x
- Mason twist 30x
- The ‘W’ 30x
Moleskin
Although I was riding solo in an unfamiliar AO I was constantly reminded by Teddy Roosevelt why we do what we do. As I ran laps around the monument I was reminded by four 21-foot granite stelae of Roosevelt’s philosophy on manhood, youth, nature, and the nation and how these translate into the core of F3. On Nature; the nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation, increased and not impaired in value. On Youth; Courage, hard work, self mastery, and intelligent effort are the essential to successful life. On Manhood; A man’s usefulness depends upon his living up to his ideals is so far as he can. It is hard to fail but it is worse to never have tried to succeed. On State; ours is a government of liberty, by, through, and under law. Order without liberty, and liberty without order are equally destructive.

Very well said, Segundo
Great post @Segundo!
Great backblast, Segundo. I have to apologize for you being solo on that day. We are a small crew to begin with and every now and again no one is able to show up and I’m afraid that is what happened this time. To top it off our Twitter Admin forgot to Tweet that we wouldn’t be there, but I’m glad you made the best of it by plowing ahead on your own.
Indeed there is many a Saturday morning when we use those benches in a similar fashion, and I always look toward the four pillars you mention and smile. In the past we’ve had a few visitors wonder if it’s OK to work out in near the TR Monument like that, and I always comment, “TR would love us doing this so I believe it’s OK at this particular Monument.”
planning a move up to DC in a month. as this is the most recent DC backblast, is the DC crew still posting? consider this a hard commit starting July if so.
Hey Bucco. The short answer to your questions is, “Yes, we still post – usually.” The ‘usually’ being the key word. As noted we are a small crew (5 or 6 regulars) and we occasionally don’t have guys there, so because of this I’ve asked us to be removed from this site so people don’t show up to an empty AO. And I’ve been so busy with life I was dreadful at posting Backblasts, so that’s why you see large gaps in these.
That being said four of us have been consistently doing the workouts since 2012 and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. We usually do something similar to what Segundo did, or we run over Memorial Bridge near the Lincoln and run a Jacob’s Ladder on the steps going down to the Potomac. So hit me up when you arrive and we’d be happy to have you. @EarlyBird_F3, or hopscotkins@gmail.com. Thanks!
