Why He Chose Fishermen

Eight men, ordered breakfast, and discussed the leadership implications of Christ’s choice to use fishermen as his disciples.

The Thang:

The following is an exert from the book My life with the Saints by James Martin, SJ.

Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him

Matthew 4:18-20

Jesus, could’ve chosen anyone for his first disciples, but he chose fishermen for a reason.

A Fisherman (a good one) must:

  1. Have patience to wait until the fish take the bait. We have to learn to wait for results, if indeed they come.)
  2. Have perseverance, continuing to push on even when odds of success seem low (we must be ready to always try again)
  3. Have courage. After all he might face a sudden storm, shipwreck, or even drowning. (There is always danger in telling others the truth.)
  4. Have an eye for the right moment, knowing when to drop a line or a net. (There is a time to speak and a time to be silent.)
  5. Fit the bait to the fish, knowing the same line won’t work for all circumstances (the same approach won’t work for all people in spreading the gospel.)
  6. Keep out of sight (as Christians , we seek to present others to Christ while remaining in the background, be humble)

Leadership Thought: In what way can we implement these lessons into other parts of our own life (work and family?)

Moleskin:

  1. I really enjoy this time together men.  I receive so much benefit from our discussion.
  2. Our talk on implementing this list into our daily lives (particularly as fathers) really resonated with me.

Really good discussion this AM @Solo Cup. Simple message but a good one to live by. There are several strong Christ followers and leaders in the HB PAX and I’m grateful for each of them. Tclaps!
